The Stories
Many of Doris’ portraits were given as gifts to family and friends, many of which we no longer have access to. However, even with this small sample, you can see the fondness Doris had for the characters she painted. Whether it was her granddaughters or someone she found in a magazine, she studied the subjects like an actor would for a role. She tried to convey what she saw in their person through her depiction of their form. Ultimately, she was a storyteller whose characters had a life of their own. This was true in her paintings and her bedtime stories.
